Food for Thought: Integrating Green Chemistry and UN Sustainability Development Goals for Engaging Learners In-Person / Online

FYI - you don’t need to know a lot of chemistry for this talk. Come for ideas about how sustainability can be integrated in your classroom.

As March is SDG month in Canada, this is a good opportunity to find out how Green Chemistry (GC) is aligned with the SDG framework. This presentation will introduce the GC Principles, how they can be used for decreasing hazards (for people and the environment), increase sustainability, and decrease waste. I will share some examples from labs, assessments, and activities in my courses.

PresenterJimmy Lowe is an instructor in the Chemistry Department and Interim Program Head for Technology Entry. He currently instructs in multiple BCIT programs (i.e. Biotechnology, Mining, OHS, Tech Entry). Jimmy is very interested in developing his skills in chemical education in combination with the science of learning. His past PD activities included refreshing his industry skills at Terramera (local Ag-tech company) and completing a certificate in Green Chemistry and Chemical Stewardship.  Jimmy is also completing courses in the Polytechnic Teaching Program and participating in outreach activities.
