AI Convolutions: Cognitive Capacities Transforming the Ethical Landscape In-Person

This session will cover a history of AI and a few selected topics:

  • Distinctive features of Large Language Models
  • AI and relationships
  • Privacy
  • Military uses

Presenters:

Melinda Hogan did her PhD in philosophy at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Her current research focuses on questions that lie at the intersection of philosophy of language, philosophy of mind and philosophy of AI, particularly, on the question whether thinking is computing (or whether thinking requires a language in which to think). She teaches at Kwantlen Polytechnic University

Vasco Castela holds a Master’s in Philosophy of Cognitive Science/AI (U. Sussex, UK) and a PhD in Ethics (U. Manchester, UK). He is the current chair of BCIT’s Research Ethics Board. As a faculty member at BCIT’s Liberal Studies Department he teaches a range of courses related to ethics, philosophy of technology and the social impact of AI.
